Super Typhoon Mangkhut, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Ompong, landed the Philippines on September 15, 2018 as a Category 5-equivalent super typhoon which subsequently affected Hong Kong and southern China.

The typhoon's highest sustained wind speed reached 285km/h. Many regions in the Philippines were severely affected as the storm collapsed buildings and public infrastructure. Floods and landslides caused by the typhoon not only buried houses and killed people, but also damaged more than 1,220,000 hectares of fields.

After the disaster, Amity's local partner KAISA in the Philippines reacted quickly and reached out to Amity for help. With a thorough assessment of the situation, the Amity Foundation HK applied for emergency relief funds for the Philippines inflicted by Ompong. The Government of Hong Kong SAR then approved a grant to offer relief goods worth of HK$ 548,000.

Until October 15, teams of Amity and its local partner together successfully distributed 2,300 packages of relief goods (each pack included water, rice, noodles and canned food).

Relief goods also timely reached remote villages where people were threatened by a lack of future livelihood as typhoon damaged their crops in the harvest season.
